When they reference AM and FM, they are referring to a digital broadcast using the the same frequency range as old school AM/FM radio. HD Radio lets them broadcast multiple digital streams on each analog range. This is very similar to what cable has been doing for years. However, it can make the same AM/FM content better if its digitally broadcast. These days, I could really care less about any sort of broadcast media - AM/FM/HD Radio/Satellite. There are just too many options to stream via internet or stored content from your favorite phone/media player/etc. I wouldn't pay extra for it myself.
